A limited ceramic edition made with the Düsseldorf jewellery brand Ariane Ernst, following a pop-up at our studio. The pieces pair thrown stoneware with fine gold details applied by hand, the precision of jewellery carried into a different material.
What is in the edition
Three forms in three colours. The espresso cup holds 75 ml at Ø 5.5 cm and H 5 cm, the coffee cup holds 190 ml at Ø 7.5 cm and H 6.5 cm, and the saucer at Ø 11 cm fits either of them. The colours are soft pink, sage and blue. Two pink pieces carry a small gold heart instead of the line, painted inside the cup where it only appears once the drink is finished. Each colour is also available as a three-piece set of espresso cup, coffee cup and saucer.
How the gold is applied
The gold goes on after the piece is fired and glazed, in a second pass, painted by hand. That is why the line sits at a slightly different height on every cup and why the ring is never quite the same width twice. It is also why every piece in this edition is hand wash only: the gold sits on top of the fired glaze rather than under it, so a dishwasher wears it down over time even though the stoneware itself would take it.
Why the pieces here are seconds
What is left of the edition online is studio seconds. Each one is fully functional but carries a small cosmetic flaw, a slight warp, a glaze irregularity, fine hairline cracks on the underside, or tiny clay specks in the glaze, and is sold at a reduced price. The edition is not restocked, so what is listed is what remains.
