Matcha Essentials

The Matcha Set - Otis brings together three hand-thrown stoneware pieces from the Viola Beuscher studio, a bamboo whisk and a tin of single-estate Uji matcha: a partially glazed pouring bowl, a matcha cup and a whisk holder in transparent glaze.

Every ceramic piece is thrown on the potter's wheel from stoneware clay sourced from the German Westerwald and fired at 1220 °C after 14 days across 12 work steps. The pouring bowl measures Ø 11 cm, the cup Ø 9 cm at H 6.5 cm and 250 ml, the whisk holder Ø 5 cm. Fired until the body vitrifies, all three stay food-safe without further sealing and go in the dishwasher.

The tea is our Limited Edition Uji Matcha, 30 g for roughly 15 servings, a single-estate matcha from a small farmer in Uji, Kyoto: clean, velvety and lightly sweet, cultivars Okumidori and Samidori. It is produced in small volume, so it can run out ahead of the next harvest. A 100 percent bamboo whisk (chasen) comes with it.

Glossy black and transparent glazes meet the bare stoneware, and because each piece is dipped by hand, no two sets carry exactly the same contrast. Nothing else is needed to start: whisk in the bowl, pour into the cup, stand the whisk in the holder to dry in shape.
